Season 5 of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars was officially announced on August 19, 2019, via Social Media and VH1's Press Website.[1] The press-release noted that this season will feature the "franchise's most notable queens to prove to Mama Ru why they deserve the crown and a coveted spot in the "'Drag Race Hall of Fame'".
No promos were shot for All Stars 5 due to lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, therefore the RuVeal consisted of the queens' entrance looks to the Werk Room. Promos were released on May 8th, 2020 along with the official cast via YouTube. It is currently available to watch on Drag Race's YouTube channel.
The official trailer announced a new twist to this season of All Stars: the Top All Star of the Week will lip sync for her legacy against a Lip Sync Assassin from a previous season; if the All Star wins the lip sync, she’ll get the power to eliminate a fellow queen, if the Assassin wins, the eliminated queen will be determined after a majority vote by the rest of the contestants, and the $10,000 tip rolls over to further episodes, until an All Star queen wins a lip sync.[2][3]
The season was originally set to air on Showtime, but was later moved back to VH1.
